The $10B Pivot: OpenAI in Talks for Massive Amazon Funding—But There’s a Silicon Catch
In December 2025, according to The Information, OpenAI is in talks with Amazon to raise as much as $10 billion in additional funding, with a key condition that OpenAI would commit to using Amazon’s AI chips. As early as November, OpenAI announced a seven-year cloud services agreement with Amazon worth up to $38 billion, under which AWS would provide large-scale supercomputing clusters based on Amazon EC2, with deployment expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
The reports suggest the relationship could move from a straightforward customer arrangement to a deeper strategic partnership if OpenAI adopts Amazon’s chips. Amazon has been developing its Trainium and Inferentia processors to challenge NVIDIA’s dominance, and training or running OpenAI’s GPT models on AWS chips could cut compute costs while validating the chips’ performance. Microsoft’s $13 billion investment to date is noted, with OpenAI still seeking a further multibillion-dollar infusion amid a high burn rate.
