FORMER AT&T retail worker Kenneth Carter, 44, has been sentenced to 16 months in federal prison for abusing his access to the company’s systems in a SIM-swapping scheme. The activity took place at an AT&T shop in Portland, Oregon, between May 2018 and November 2019.
According to court documents, Carter worked with at least three other people and caused nearly $600,000 in intended losses. A co-conspirator described as the operation’s main “hacker” identified people with online bank accounts, collected their personal information and passed it to Carter. He then transferred the victims’ mobile numbers to devices controlled by the other criminals. This allowed them to receive authentication codes intended for the victims and raid their bank accounts. Court documents described Carter’s role as “instrumental to the scheme.”
