Meet Mico: Microsoft Unveils Clippy’s Emotional, AI-Powered Successor for Copilot

Microsoft has unveiled a new character persona for Copilot’s voice mode, named “Mico,” described as expressive, customizable, and warm, a modern homage to Clippy reimagined with AI. In a blog post, according to Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft’s Head of AI, Mico is an embodiment of an AI companion that listens, reacts in real time, and shifts colours to match the interaction.

The feature is currently rolling out first in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, enabled by default in Copilot’s voice mode and powered by MAI-Voice-1 and MAI-1-Preview models, with an option to disable if preferred. Beyond Mico, Microsoft announced Copilot Groups, enabling up to 32 participants to collaborate in real time, and a Persistent Memory that can recall information across OneDrive, Outlook, and Gmail through natural-language queries.

Additional offerings include Copilot for Health, Learn Live, and deeper integration across Edge and Windows, such as a wake phrase “Hey Copilot” and the Journeys feature to organise browsing history into storylines.
