Qantas cuts executive bonuses by 15% after a July data breach

Qantas has cut executive bonuses by 15% after a July cyberattack exposed data belonging to about 5.7 million people, with the airline reporting a profit of $1.5 billion in the last fiscal year. The reductions were described as a devision to cut bonuses for the CEO and Executive Management, reflecting shared accountability for the incident’s impact on customers.

The breach was linked to hackers accessing a third‑party platform used by a call centre, and Qantas confirmed that data such as customer names, emails, phone numbers and frequent flyer details were affected. According to Qantas Group Chairman John Mullen, the pay of CEO Vanessa Hudson was cut by $250,000 as part of the measures taken. The article notes that extortion attempts were initiated by hackers after the incident and that Qantas emphasised transparency and continued customer protections.
