Apple Upgrades Spyware Defense: iOS 26.1 Adds Native Threat Notifications for Pegasus Attacks

Apple has rolled out native threat notifications in iOS 26.1 Beta 3 to alert users when they may be targeted by mercenary spyware such as Pegasus, replacing the previous email, message and web-based alerts. The alerts appear directly through the iOS Notification Center and are part of Apple’s Advanced iCloud Protection, which also imposes heightened restrictions to reduce exposure to attacks.

The piece notes that mercenary spyware exploits are leased to state or government entities and aimed at specific, high-value individuals or organisations, with Pegasus capable of accessing stored data, activating the camera and microphone, tracking GPS location, and retrieving calls, texts and photos. Apple’s approach emphasises early warning and containment, including possible restrictions on Safari scripts to limit malicious code-based exploits.

The article clarifies that these threat alerts concern targeted spyware campaigns rather than ordinary cyberattacks. October 14, 2025 marks the publication date for this update.
