Kenya Kicks Off 'Code Nation' With a Nod to Cybersecurity
Kenya Kicks Off 'Code Nation' With a Nod to Cybersecurity describes a plan to become a Code Nation, aiming to add more than 1 million technology specialists to its digital workforce, including software engineers, cybersecurity specialists and data scientists.
The effort is part of Code Nation’s wider goal to connect 99% of the population with high-speed digital fibre networks, according to John Kipchumba Tanui, principal secretary in the State Department for Information and Communications Technology and the Digital Economy. By 2027, Kenya plans to have 100,000 km of optical fibre deployed, up from 37,313 km today, with the country having 2.14 million fixed broadband connections in the past three years.
The piece notes that private sector partners, including Microsoft, Google and Amazon, are contributing to regional cybersecurity efforts, and that Microsoft has kicked off its Advancing Regional Cybersecurity initiative working with Kenya’s NC4. It also references Kenya’s 2024 commitment to the Framework for Responsible State Behaviour in Cyberspace and the invitation to sign the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime, as part of broader regional security strengthening.
