OPENAI has announced a major update to its ChatGPT Chrome extension, introducing browser context awareness that lets ChatGPT see and analyse the tabs a user has open. The enhancement, available on Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers, pairs with theChatGPT Work agent to automate multi‑tab, multi-step tasks. In practical terms, users can grant ChatGPT access to all open tabs and ask it to compare information, fill forms, or draft replies across several sites without copying and pasting text.
Three core upgrades drive the new capabilities. Tab Context Awareness allows the AI to read user-selected open tabs to perform tasks such as cross-tab comparisons of product details or terms. ChatGPT Work Agents are designed for complex jobs, enabling tasks like filling in forms on multiple dental booking tabs and adding confirmed times to a calendar, or analysing terms in several contractor tabs.
Persistent Sidebar History keeps a live, side‑by‑side chat with ChatGPT that remains available as users browse, allowing task handoff without switching tabs. The extension supports all plans (free or paid) and runs on Chromium-based browsers including Microsoft Edge, Brave and Opera, in addition to Google Chrome. OpenAI’s stance in the article is that this is a strategic move to broaden reach across browsers, contrasted with Google Gemini’s browser integration.
