Coming Soon: US Passports Are Coming to Apple Wallet as Digital ID
At the Money20/20 conference in Las Vegas, Jennifer Bailey, Vice President of Apple Pay and Wallet, revealed that iPhone users in the United States will soon be able to scan their physical U.S. passports and add them to the Apple Wallet, turning them into REAL ID–compliant digital identification documents. This marks Apple’s continued expansion of Wallet beyond payments into digital identity verification, with prior moves already allowing some states to store driver’s licences in Wallet.
According to Apple, once launched, users will simply scan their passport to create a REAL ID–compliant digital identity for domestic air travel and access to certain federal facilities, while the digital passport will not be valid for international travel. In future, digital IDs could be presented at participating Transportation Security Administration checkpoints when boarding domestic flights, eliminating the need to carry a physical passport for identity verification.
The Identity Management Institute warns of risks such as security vulnerabilities and privacy concerns and advises steps like strong unique passwords, 2FA, up-to-date devices, and verifying legitimate sites when using digital IDs. 29 October 2025.
