Privacy Win: Firefox Mandates Clear Data Collection Disclosure for All Extensions

Firefox is tightening privacy rules for extensions, requiring all newly published extensions to declare whether they collect or transmit personal information, with existing extensions not being immediately affected. Beginning 3 November 2025, the policy mandates transparency so users are informed in advance when data is being gathered, and even extensions that do not collect data must explicitly state this in their disclosures.

According to Mozilla’s roadmap, by mid-2026 disclosure will be mandatory for all extensions, meaning any existing add-on releasing a new version must include a data collection statement. Extensions that postpone disclosure must do so no later than the first half of 2026, and during installation users will see clear notifications indicating the data collection status. The move could lead to the disabling of older, unmaintained extensions unless developers update disclosures to comply.
