AI Powered Robocalls Exploit Caller ID Gaps Despite Regulations

The article discusses the growing issue of robocalls enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI) and how caller ID systems are still vulnerable to spoofing. Despite the introduction of regulations like the TRACED Act and the STIR/SHAKEN standards, many smaller telecom providers do not effectively implement caller ID authentication, allowing scammers to exploit these weaknesses.

AI advancements have made it easier for cybercriminals to clone voices and create convincing robocalls that can manipulate caller ID to appear legitimate, posing significant risks to consumers. Recommendations for protecting against these scams include being skeptical of urgent calls, treating caller ID as a clue, avoiding unexpected automated instructions, using call-blocking tools, and checking suspicious numbers.
