Apple iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Feature A19 Chips With Spyware-Resistant Memory Safety
On 10 September 2025, Apple revealed a security feature called Memory Integrity Enforcement (MIE) built into the new iPhone models, including iPhone 17 and iPhone Air. MIE offers “always-on memory safety protection” across the kernel and more than 70 userland processes, without sacrificing performance, by leveraging the A19 and A19 Pro chips.
The technology rests on enhanced memory tagging and security policies, with memory allocators protected by Enhanced Memory Tagging Extension (EMTE) and a system named Tag Confidentiality Enforcement (TCE) to guard against side-channel and speculative execution attacks. Apple notes that MIE extends Memory Tagging Extension (MTE) to block out-of-bounds accesses and use-after-free scenarios, addressing a key weakness of the original MTE specification.
The company also cites that Google Project Zero researcher Mark Brand described MTE as a significant improvement for diagnostics and security. The release contrasts with existing implementations on other platforms, and Apple positions MIE as transforming MTE from a debugging aid into a comprehensive defence against two common vulnerability classes.
