Deepfake Defense: YouTube Rolls Out AI Tool to Protect Creator Likeness
YouTube has begun rolling out its Likeness Detection Tool to a limited group of creators to help combat unauthorized deepfake content. In its initial phase, the feature will be available exclusively to members of the YouTube Partner Program, with monetised creators considered more likely targets of impersonation. According to YouTube’s documentation, applicants must complete a verification process that requires a government-issued ID and a short video selfie.
This helps ensure the person represented is genuine and provides the AI with material to build an accurate facial model for future scans and comparisons. Once a potential match is detected, creators can review the flagged content and request removal if it constitutes unauthorized use. At present, the system detects AI-modified facial imagery, but it does not yet address cases where AI-generated voices accompany unaltered visuals. 23 October 2025.
