Microsoft Adds Wi-Fi-Based Work Location Auto-Detection to Teams
Microsoft is preparing to introduce a Wi‑Fi-based work location auto‑detection feature in Teams, which will automatically identify and update users’ work locations by their connection to organisational Wi‑Fi networks. Scheduled for deployment in December 2025, the opt‑in functionality maps specific Wi‑Fi networks to office buildings, updating a user’s status when a recognised network is connected.
The system can also recognise connected peripherals such as monitors and docking stations to provide additional location data, while privacy is central: location updates occur only during working hours as defined in Outlook calendars, and all data is cleared at the end of each workday.
The feature remains disabled by default and requires IT administrators to enable it at the tenant level using PowerShell commands such as New-CsTeamsWorkLocationDetectionPolicy, after which individual users opt in through a consent prompt within the Teams app. According to Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 488800, the general availability rollout is expected to start in early December and complete by mid‑December across all regions.
