Android Quick Share Now Interoperable with AirDrop, Starting with Pixel 10!
According to Google, Android Quick Share will officially support interoperability with Apple’s AirDrop, starting with the Pixel 10 series and planned to expand to additional Android devices in the future. Google notes that this compatibility is achieved through its own implementation, not as a result of official collaboration with Apple, but rather a unilateral effort to reverse-engineer and interoperate with the AirDrop protocol.
The system will use AirDrop’s “Everyone for 10 minutes” discovery mode, with Pixel → iPhone and iPhone → Pixel transfers possible when the respective devices are set to receiving mode for 10 minutes, and the connection remains strictly peer-to-peer with no data passing through a server or being logged or stored. AirDrop Contacts Only mode remains unsupported for now.
The implementation is built in Rust, with independent security review by NetSPI and praise from Stanford’s Dan Boneh, while Apple’s response remains uncertain. The move positions Google as challenging Apple’s closed ecosystem, with Pixel 10 taking the lead and other manufacturers pursuing similar cross-brand ambitions.
