IBM and AMD Unite to Build the Future of Quantum Computing
IBM and AMD have unveiled a deep strategic partnership to co-develop a Quantum-Centric Supercomputing system that blends high-performance computing with quantum processing, aimed at driving scientific and industrial innovation. The collaborators plan a scalable, open-source platform to advance hybrid architectures and next-generation algorithms, leveraging IBM’s Qiskit software stack alongside AMD’s CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs and AI accelerators.
They envision a clear division of labour, with classical supercomputers handling massive data analysis and AI inference while quantum systems simulate atomic and molecular phenomena, pushing computational performance beyond today’s limits. A fault-tolerant quantum computer is targeted for 2030, with real-time error correction capabilities provided by AMD components to support large-scale systems, and integrated workflows expected to be showcased as early as the second half of this year.
IBM has previously connected its Quantum System Two with Japan’s Fugaku supercomputer in June, and the partnership positions quantum computing as a practical catalyst for industrial transformation rather than purely experimental endeavour.
