Microsoft Publishes Guide for Certificate-Based Authentication in Windows Admin Center
Microsoft has released comprehensive guidance for implementing certificate-based authentication in Windows Admin Center (WAC), according to Microsoft, aimed at giving administrators stronger security through smart card integration and Active Directory Certificate Services.
The guide outlines a four-step setup, beginning with preparing Active Directory and AD CS as an enterprise Certification Authority, and provisioning administrators with physical smart cards or TPM-backed virtual cards, while replacing the default gateway certificate with an SSL certificate matching the gateway’s DNS name.
It then details creating a smart card logon certificate template named “IT Admin Smartcard Logon” with 2048‑bit or higher keys and PIN prompting, and configuring mapping from AD information to the certificate. A universal security group “WAC-CertAuth-Required” is introduced, with steps to use ADSI Edit to map the group to a certificate template OID so domain controllers include the group in Kerberos tokens when the smart card certificate is used.
Finally, the guide covers configuring Windows Admin Center as the identity provider, restricting access to approved groups, and testing to verify that password-only logins are denied while smart card logins grant access. The article notes that this approach significantly strengthens administrative access controls by requiring certificate-based authentication factors in addition to traditional credentials.
