Amazon Unveils AI Smart Glasses to Boost Delivery Speed and Safety
Amazon has confirmed it is developing a pair of AI-driven smart glasses designed for its delivery drivers, building on earlier reports. The glasses use sensing and computer vision to interpret images from a built-in camera and display real-time guidance via a heads-up display embedded in the lenses. Early testing by hundreds of delivery drivers informed refinements to the design, with the aim of boosting delivery efficiency and driver safety on routes.
The system automatically activates when the driver parks, displaying a delivery list on the HUD and using visual recognition to verify items selected from a pile of parcels. As drivers move on foot, the HUD provides turn-by-turn walking directions, highlights hazards, and assists in navigating complex environments, including apartment buildings, while allowing proof-of-delivery photos to be captured through the glasses.
The device pairs with a swappable-battery vest and an emergency button for quick help, with future versions expected to add more AI features such as warnings about wrong addresses and detecting additional hazards like pets in a yard, according to The Information. Early testing suggested drivers could save roughly thirty minutes per shift on average.
