SOUTH Korea's largest telecom provider, KT, has been fined $38 million for significant security failures that allowed hackers to defraud over 368 customers through fraudulent micropayments. The breach originated from a compromised femtocell, which hackers used to access the KT mobile network and intercept user information.

The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) found that KT's internal network lacked adequate security measures, leading to the theft of personal data from 16,647 users and escape of malware onto 38 internal servers. The PIPC mandated KT to strengthen its security protocols following the investigation.
