MICROSOFT has announced that Windows Server 2025 now includes Quick Machine Recovery (QMR), a feature that first appeared on Windows 11. Introduced after a major outage earlier in 2025, QMR activates when a server experiences a severe fault: WinRE (Windows Recovery Environment) is contacted online to locate a targeted remediation from Microsoft servers, which is then downloaded and applied automatically, with the system rebooting afterwards. If no remedy is found, the server falls back to the standard recovery process.
The mechanism is designed to speed recovery after large-scale failures by enabling machines to fetch remedies over the network without manual intervention. Admins retain control: QMR can be enabled or disabled, and the scanning and applying of fixes can be set to automatic or manual, via Group Policy under Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System, Quick Machine Recovery.
Key policy settings include Cloud remediation (WinRE online fetches fixes), Auto remediation (whether fixes are checked after boot failures), and retry controls (the default is a single attempt, with an adjustable interval to support unattended or headless servers).
Microsoft’s rollout guidance emphasises testing the policy and recovery environment on a small set of servers before broader deployment, and applying the policy through domain Group Policy scoped to Windows Server 2025 only. The article links to guidance on configuring QMR via Group Policy and notes the feature’s lineage to the July 2025 CrowdStrike-driven outage that affected millions of devices.
