Coupang announces $1.17B compensation plan for 33.7M data breach victims

Coupang will spend about $1.17 billion to compensate 33.7 million users affected by a data breach, offering purchase vouchers across its services. The four vouchers total 50,000 won and become usable from 15 January, with eligibility checkable in the app. The breach was disclosed last December and exposed names, emails, phone numbers, shipping addresses and some order histories, though the company said no payment data or login credentials were compromised.

Coupang noted that the data exposure began on 24 June 2025 and that it blocked the unauthorized access route, strengthened internal monitoring and retained security experts. The company also said it would notify affected users via text message about the voucher redemption process and that 33.7 million account holders in South Korea were affected.

The incident adds to a history of cybersecurity events involving Coupang, including earlier data exposures from 2020–2021 and a December 2023 breach affecting over 22,000 customers.
