End of Anonymous Sideloading: Google to Require Developer Verification on Android

Google has announced a new security measure for the Android ecosystem, requiring users who sideload apps to ensure the app comes from a verified developer. According to Google, risk assessments show that malware from sideloaded sources is over 50 times more prevalent than software distributed via the Google Play Store, prompting identity verification to curb malicious and fraudulent apps.

The verification will not assess app content, only the developer’s identity, with verified developers able to distribute through third‑party stores while unverified apps will be blocked on Google‑certified Android devices. In practice, this means developer verification will become a prerequisite for sideloading in markets where Google Play Services certification is common, such as the United States and Europe, though devices without Google certification may continue to carry higher sideloading risks. The policy is slated to debut by late 2026 in markets including Brazil, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand before a global expansion.
