AWS Frontier Agents: Autonomous AI ‘Team Members’ Take Over Dev, Security, and Ops
At re:Invent 2025, AWS unveiled Frontier Agents, a new class of autonomous AI team members designed to operate independently across development, security and operations. Built atop Kiro, the agents are described as scalable and capable of carrying out complex tasks for hours or days without constant human oversight. In the initial release, AWS introduced three Frontier Agents, each tailored to one of the core engineering domains.
The Security Agent not only audits design documents and code for compliance but also makes on-demand penetration testing a routine capability. SmugMug tested the agent and reported it detected business-logic vulnerabilities missed by traditional tools while shortening penetration-testing timelines from days to hours and dramatically reducing costs.
The DevOps Agent, meanwhile, integrates CloudWatch, Datadog, Splunk and code-repository knowledge to correlate telemetry with deployment metadata and pinpoint root causes with notable precision, with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia noting a 15-minute identification of a complex networking and identity-management issue during testing. According to the article, AWS emphasises not just faster workflows but a redefinition of human–AI collaboration to free teams for higher-value work.
