The Chromebook Killer Fails: Microsoft to Kill Windows 11 SE in 2026
Microsoft has now confirmed that support for Windows 11 SE will be discontinued at the end of 2026, with official end-of-support on 13 October 2026 after which security updates and bug fixes will stop and technical support will be terminated. The operating system, designed primarily for the education sector, imposed restrictions such as blocking the execution of any executable files (.exe) without approval from an IT administrator, in an effort to reduce malware infections and restrict non-educational content.
Devices preinstalled with Windows 11 SE typically come with only 4 GB of memory and 64 GB of eMMC storage, a hardware profile described as delivering a very poor experience when running the standard edition of Windows 11. Microsoft has advised schools and IT teams to consider transitioning to hardware capable of running the standard edition, signalling the need to purchase new devices to support the full operating system.
As a result, schools previously invested in the Windows 11 SE ecosystem may need to seek additional funding or pivot to alternative platforms, such as Apple’s iPad or Google’s Chromebook.
