Cutting the Cord: QEMU 11.0 to Expunge 32-Bit Host Support in Cloud Variant
QEMU is moving to expunge 32-bit processor support from its Cloud host variant, a change confined to the Cloud distribution while the standard QEMU remains 32-bit capable. Project developers have submitted a comprehensive suite of fifty patches aimed at removing 32-bit host support entirely, a refactoring expected to shave more than 7,000 lines from the QEMU and TCG codebases.
The article notes that 32-bit support had already been obsolescent, and that in QEMU 10.0 the Cloud variant abandoned official support for 32-bit processors, with the caveat that security and functional updates ceased for such hardware. Looking ahead, hosts with 32-bit processors will be barred from migrating to QEMU 11.0 Cloud, although users may stay on the 10.x branch; the plan, however, remains subject to formal ratification.
The piece emphasises that these changes are currently in the conceptual phase and awaiting a final release decision, with detailed change logs and discussion available for review according to CVE Watchtower.
