The $600 Billion Figure: Meta Commits Massive Investment to AI Data Centers
Meta has announced plans to invest $600 billion in U.S. infrastructure and employment by 2028, with the vast majority directed toward building AI data centres.
In a blog post the company stated that by building in the US it would be “advancing AI technology and infrastructure, but also creating jobs, supporting local economies, and reinforcing America’s technological leadership.” The announcement follows a high-profile dinner at the White House in September this year, where the figure was first mentioned during discussions with tech executives, and an inadvertent hot-mic moment involving a private exchange between Mark Zuckerberg and President Donald Trump. Meta’s official statement now confirms that the $600 billion figure discussed that evening is the final investment number formalised.
To support the ambition, Meta noted that since 2010 its data centres have created over 30,000 technical roles and 5,000 operational jobs, while contributing more than $20 billion in business to American contractors, a figure the company highlights alongside its revived reference to “superintelligence.” Some industry voices, including Steve Wozniak and Geoffrey Hinton, have expressed unease about accelerating AI development before safety and controllability can be assured.
