OpenAI Launches FREE, FERPA-Compliant ChatGPT for K–12 Teachers Until 2027

OpenAI has announced ChatGPT for Teachers, a FERPA-compliant, AI-powered service designed for educators, with a first rollout in the United States offering free access through June 2027. According to OpenAI, the platform features heightened security, compliance and administrative safeguards for school environments, including data encryption in transit and at rest, multi-factor authentication and single sign-on.

Domain-level enrolment and an administrative console help districts organise educators within a central workspace governed by permission controls, while teachers gain access to the full suite of ChatGPT tools, including file uploads, image generation, data analysis and web browsing.

The service also integrates with Canva, Google Drive and Microsoft 365, enabling streamlined lesson planning and collaborative work among staff, and OpenAI is currently partnering with school districts representing roughly 150,000 educators and staff to study large-scale implementation.

Pricing after the free period ends is described as affordable, with the aim of keeping the service available to educators at a reasonable cost, and OpenAI pledges that instructional materials or information shared will not be used to train AI models.
