PCI warns payment threats accelerate as BridgePay outage hits

ACCORDING to the PCI Security Standards Council, the 2025 annual report shows threats to payments systems are speeding up even as the council expands its remit and activities. The report notes sustained global collaboration to safeguard payments, with milestones including 64 member organisations on the board of advisors, multiple training sessions held in Dubai for the first time in nine years, and the launch of an India-South Asia board.

Arielle Waldman, writing for Dark Reading, explains that the pace of change in payments and the sophistication of threats are both increasing, prompting calls for a more structured delivery model and earlier stakeholder engagement. The piece also highlights that organisations remain a big target, with recent incidents such as a ransomware attack disclosed by BridgePay Network Solutions affecting payment processing.

Overall, the report frames a shift from a niche compliance issue to a board-level business and security concern, while emphasising the need for global coordination to reduce fragmentation and accelerate threat intelligence and defensive efforts.
