Apple sued over fake Sparrow Wallet app that stole $1.8m

Apple is facing a federal lawsuit over claims that it allowed a fake version of the Sparrow Wallet cryptocurrency app in its App Store, resulting in a loss of $1.8 million for users. Three individuals downloaded the fraudulent app, which prompted them to enter sensitive recovery phrases, allowing criminals access to their cryptocurrency wallets.

The legitimate app developer had reported the fake app multiple times, but Apple failed to act promptly, even terminating the developer's account when he attempted to intervene. The plaintiffs are suing for misrepresentation and seeking compensation. The incident highlights an ongoing issue with fake cryptocurrency apps on Apple’s platform, prompting warnings about app authenticity.
