The End of the Shopping Tab: Google Unveils “Agentic Commerce” and UCP

At NRF 2026 Retail’s Big Show in New York, Google CEO Sundar Pichai unveiled the company’s nascent e-commerce strategy, introducing the concept of “Agentic Commerce” and the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). The objective is to revolutionise online shopping by deploying autonomous AI Agents and providing a standardized framework that lets AI navigate product discovery, price comparison, and final procurement across platforms on behalf of users.

The vision aims to remove friction by allowing the AI to interpret complex queries and autonomously scan inventories, evaluate specifications, and complete purchases within the Google interface, reducing the need for external redirection. UCP is described as an open standard developed with retailers such as Shopify, Walmart and Target, functioning as a universal API for real-time access to inventory, prices and logistics data, with stakeholders including American Express, Mastercard, Visa, Stripe and Home Depot.

Brand customization tools include Business Agents and Direct Offers, which generate promotional codes within the interface and enable training of AI representatives using official datasets. The rollout will begin in the United States with Google Pay and PayPal before expanding globally, with retailers remaining the Merchants of Record and Google acting as a technology facilitator to protect transaction data.
