UK: ‘Catastrophic’ attack as Russians hack files on EIGHT MoD bases and post them on the dark web

A UK news piece published on 19 October 2025 describes a “catastrophic” security breach in which Russian hackers stole hundreds of sensitive military documents containing details of eight RAF and Royal Navy bases, as well as Ministry of Defence staff names and emails, and posted them on the dark web. The attackers gained access by compromising a maintenance and construction contractor used by the MoD, in what has been described as the gateway attack targeting the third party the Dodd Group.

The MoD says it is investigating the incident, which is believed to have been carried out by a Russian group named Lynx, with claims supported by reporting in The Daily Mail. Leaked documents seen by The Mail on Sunday reveal information about bases including RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, where the US Air Force’s F-35 jets are based and nuclear bombs are believed to be housed. According to The Daily Mail, the MoD’s response continues as it assesses the scale and impact of the breach.
