Europol Shuts Down CryptoMixer, Seizes €25 Million in Bitcoin & 12 TB of Data
Europol has disclosed that, during a coordinated operation, it dismantled CryptoMixer, a centralised custodial mixing service used by cybercriminals to obscure illicit cryptocurrency flows. Investigators seized more than €25 million in digital assets, primarily Bitcoin, and confiscated more than 12 terabytes of data from three servers hosting the platform.
The primary domain cryptomixer[.]io was taken offline and now displays an official seizure notice, with the operators behind the service not yet confirmed as apprehended. Since 2016, CryptoMixer had processed over €1.3 billion worth of Bitcoin, illustrating the scale of the laundering activity associated with the service. The case underscores enforcement concerns around centralised mixers, which law enforcement argues allow authorities to seize the infrastructure and funds, in contrast to decentralised mixers.
