Farmers Insurance, Farmers Insurance Exchange and its affiliated companies filed breach notification documents after suffering a security incident via a third‑party vendor, with more than 1 million customers affected. The breach occurred on 29 May and was discovered the following day, 30 May, when the third‑party vendor detected suspicious activity involving an unauthorized actor accessing one of its databases containing customer information.
The vendor’s monitoring tools allowed for rapid containment, and Farmers launched a comprehensive investigation and notified appropriate law enforcement authorities, according to the filing with the Office of the Maine Attorney General. On 24 July, the investigation concluded that some customers’ personal information was compromised, though the company did not specify what kind of personal data was involved, and it says it is unaware of any misuse to date. Affected individuals will be offered two years of complimentary identity monitoring services.
