GM Bets on AI: Gemini to Replace CarPlay/Android Auto in All Cars by 2026
At its recent “GM Forward” media event, General Motors announced a major shift in its software strategy, revealing plans to deeply integrate Google’s Gemini platform into its cars, trucks and SUVs from 2026. According to GM, the Gemini-powered assistant will replace the current Google built-in operating system and will retain access to services like Google Maps and Google Assistant, while offering improved natural interaction and real-time vehicle data analysis for maintenance alerts and route planning.
Deployment will occur via Over-the-Air updates distributed through the Google Play Store for vehicles equipped with OnStar, with support extending to models released as early as 2015. The move comes amid scrutiny of GM’s data practices, following a five-year FTC ban on selling driver data tied to the OnStar Smart Driver programme, though GM says the Gemini integration will be privacy-first with drivers retaining control over accessible information.
GM also indicated it aims to phase out Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto gradually as Gemini and its proprietary systems roll out, with broader goals including an in-house computing platform and a dedicated autonomous driving platform slated for 2028.
