Why Runtime Is Where Cloud Security Really Counts
Published on 13 January 2026, the piece argues that cloud security must move from prevention alone to a runtime-first approach, because attacks unfold at runtime across ever-changing workloads and identities.
It outlines four defining capabilities of Darktrace / CLOUD that secure the execution layer as it happens: real-time behavioural detection across cloud services, identities and data flows; automated forensic artefact collection that preserves volatile evidence; an AI-led investigation that weaves together identity activity and network patterns; and live architectural awareness that maps the cloud environment as it operates.
The article stresses that runtime evidence is ephemeral and that traditional posture scans capture only after the damage is done, making runtime monitoring essential to detect, understand and contain threats in real time. It also cites a recent AWS scenario to illustrate detections visible only when monitoring behavior live, such as unusual credential use, CLI pivot, and rapid data exfiltration, arguing these would not be fully captured by posture tools alone.
