Human-Like AI: Google Translate Gets Gemini Upgrade for Slang & Tone Preservation
Google has announced a Gemini-powered upgrade for Translate that aims to make translations feel more distinctly human by better interpreting slang and idiomatic expressions, while adding real-time translation for headphone users that preserves the speaker’s tone. According to Google, the integration allows text translation to handle far more nuanced meanings, contextualising informal expressions for translations that sound natural and culturally attuned.
The initial rollout will begin in the United States and India, supporting English and around 20 other languages—including Chinese, German, Spanish, and Arabic—across iOS, Android, and web platforms, with voice translation also enhanced for real-time listening through headphones.
It is currently available as a beta on the Android version of Google Translate in the U.S., with an iOS release planned for next year, and its standout feature is the ability to preserve tone, emphasis and cadence, aiding comprehension of whether a speaker is angry, joking, or earnest. The update also expands pronunciation feedback and real-time capabilities to more regions, while broadening the language-learning tools in the Translate app.
