Microsoft says recent Windows update didn't kill your SSD
Microsoft says the August 2025 KB5063878 security update for Windows 11 24H2 is not to blame for reported SSD and HDD failures. The company previously told BleepingComputer it was aware of user reports of SSD issues after installing this month’s update and has since conducted further testing with storage device partners.
According to Microsoft, there is no connection between the update and the hard drive failures described on social media, and no increase in disk faults or data corruption has been observed in telemetry or internal testing. The issue has been linked by some reports to multiple drive models, including Corsair Force MP600, Maxio SSD, SanDisk Extreme Pro, and drives with InnoGrit and Phison controllers, with affected drives reportedly becoming inaccessible after heavy write operations.
A Phison spokesperson said the company is working with Microsoft to resolve the issue. Users running Windows 11 with drives over 60% full were advised to avoid writing large files while the root cause is investigated, as per the service alert seen by BleepingComputer.
