Epic Games Victory: Supreme Court Denies Google’s Appeal, Forcing Play Store Policy Overhaul by Oct 22
The US Supreme Court has formally denied Google’s appeal, meaning that Google must revise its Play Store policies by 22 October. Under the court order, developers will be allowed to use their own or third‑party payment systems without platform fees and to enable direct external download links for apps distributed outside the Play Store.
The ruling also prohibits exclusive pre‑installation agreements between Google and smartphone manufacturers or telecom operators, with a further deadline of July 2026 to allow users to download alternative app stores directly within the Play Store or grant competitors access to Google’s app catalog.
The dispute traces back to 2020 when Epic Games accused Google of abusing its Android monopoly, and a December 2023 federal jury ruling found Google’s conduct unfair to developers, with Google’s appeal subsequently rejected by the Ninth Circuit in July 2024. The decision is described as potentially reshaping the Android marketplace and could signal a broader movement towards a more open app ecosystem.
