Discord says hackers stole government IDs of 70,000 users

According to Dan Goodin, Discord says hackers stole images of government IDs from roughly 70,000 users who had provided them to support age-related reviews. The breach involved a third-party customer service provider entrusted by Discord to manage the data, with the attackers gaining access to information from users who had contacted Discord’s Customer Support or Trust & Safety teams.

Discord cut off the unnamed vendor’s access to its ticketing system after discovering the incident and is emailing affected users, with notifications issued from noreply@discord[.]com. The company describes the incident as a “substantial risk for identity theft” and notes that the breach could heighten threats as more sites require official IDs for verification.

The piece also points to a broader trend of age-verification requirements across platforms, including several major services, and cautions users to stay vigilant for suspicious messages.
