FBI : Cybercrime Losses Neared $21 Billion in 2025 reports that the FBI received 1,008,597 complaints of malicious activity in 2025, with losses totalling $20.877 billion. According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) report, investments crimes led the losses, followed by business email compromise (BEC) at $3 billion and tech support scams at $2.1 billion, with extortion losses just over $122 million.
Cryptocurrency investment fraud was identified as the most lucrative crime, causing over $7.2 billion in losses. The IC3 notes that nearly one-fifth of complaints involved phishing or spoofing. Ransomware losses exceeded $32 million in 2025, and the overall trend was a 26% year‑over‑year increase, with the total losses from cyber-enabled crimes over the past six years surpassing $70 billion.
Victims are typically approached via texts, social media, ads or dating apps, lured to fake investment platforms or apps before funds are withdrawn or misappropriated.
