Spotify Launches Direct Messaging Feature Amid Security Concerns
Spotify this week unveiled a new Direct Messaging feature, enabling users to share songs, podcasts and audiobooks within the app. The rollout is to Free and Premium users aged 16 and older in select markets on mobile devices, consolidating sharing into a dedicated chat-like interface.
According to Spotify, the shift aims to reinforce word-of-mouth discovery, with faster content exchange and one-on-one chats that foster discussion around recommendations; it also notes enhanced artist reach as users promote tracks within their network. Cybersecurity analysts warn that in-app messaging can be abused if safeguards are not strong, and the article highlights risks such as phishing, spam and malware links.
To address these risks, Spotify emphasises encryption in transit and at rest, proactive detection technology, and user controls including the ability to accept or reject message requests, along with blocking and reporting options. The piece also notes that Spotify plans to expand messaging availability globally in the coming months, as the service continues to build safeguards for its 600+ million users.
