A recent indictment from the U.S. Department of Justice has charged 17 members of Iran's Mabna Institute in a massive cyber theft operation, allegedly linked to the IRGC. The group is accused of hacking into numerous universities and organizations worldwide, compromising around 8,000 professor accounts and stealing over 31 terabytes of data. The operation, which has been ongoing since 2013, targeted over 100,000 accounts across 144 U.S. and 178 foreign universities.

Prosecutors claim that the stolen research was resold on Iranian websites. The financial impact includes over $3.4 billion spent by U.S. universities on the targeted data and over $20 million in remediation costs for private and government victims. No arrests have been made, but the State Department is offering rewards for information on five of the accused individuals.
