Sex offenders, terrorists, drug dealers, exposed in spyware breach
The Malwarebytes article reports a spyware breach that exposed monitoring data from RemoteCOM, a service marketed for managing pretrial, probation and parole clients, and its software branded as SCOUT. According to a report by Straight Arrow News, the hacker “wikkid” described the intrusion as “one of the easiest” they’d carried out against RemoteCOM.
The leaked materials include a training manual and two key files: “officers” with 6,896 entries containing names, phone numbers, work addresses, email addresses, unique IDs and job titles of people in the criminal-justice system, and “clients” with around 14,000 entries listing names, emails, IP addresses, home addresses and phone numbers, plus probation officers’ names and emails.
The data also cover the offences clients were charged with, ranging from sex offences and weapons to terrorism, stalking, sex trafficking, fraud, violence and hacking. The breach highlights that RemoteCOM’s branding sits alongside spyware capabilities such as keystroke recording and screenshot capture, and notes the potential risks to both clients and officers.
