UK bans under 16s from social media, orders ID checks from 2027

The UK government announced a nationwide ban on social media for users under 16, set to take effect in spring 2027. This policy mandates age verification for all accounts, including adult registrations. A public consultation revealed strong support, with 90% of parents and 60% of youth in favor of the ban. Affected platforms include Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter), while educational and low-risk services are exempt.

The policy prohibits anonymous accounts, requiring ID verification for almost all users. Exceptions exist for long-standing accounts. Criticism arises from concerns over privacy and the elimination of anonymous social media use.
