A Safer Chat: OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT for Teens
OpenAI has announced that by the end of 2025 it will officially launch “ChatGPT for Teens”, a version of its AI platform designed for users aged 13 to 18, with the aim of strengthening privacy and safety protections while giving parents enhanced management tools. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT for Teens will be automatically enabled whenever the system cannot confidently verify that a user is over 18, safeguarding privacy and data.
Parents or guardians will be able to link their accounts to their teenager’s profile via an invitation system and can manage key settings, such as whether conversation memory is enabled, whether chat histories are retained, and even establish “restricted hours” to prevent late-night overuse. The system also promises immediate alerts to parents if signs of acute distress or potential mental health risks are detected, enabling early intervention.
OpenAI notes the rollout will occur in phases, with future collaborations with schools and educational institutions under consideration to foster safe use of AI for learning and creativity rather than entertainment.
