Windows Agentic OS Revealed: Microsoft Aims to Transform Windows 11 into an AI-First Platform
Microsoft is gradually weaving a wide range of artificial intelligence capabilities into Windows 11, with the most significant being the Microsoft Copilot suite of AI-driven services, though some features require hardware such as processors with dedicated NPUs. It is clear the aim goes beyond adding tools, with the underlying goal to transform Windows 11 into an AI-first, agentic operating system that allows AI services to directly participate in user interactions.
Pavan Davuluri, head of the Microsoft Windows team, revealed that the next generation of the operating system will understand user intent semantically as Windows becomes increasingly multimodal, with Copilot Vision enabling AI to “see” the user’s screen and perform more tasks.
According to Microsoft’s description, the Model Context Protocol (MCP) for Windows 11 provides a standardized framework for AI agents to connect with native Windows applications, allowing AI to participate in agentic interactions across the OS while Windows applications expose capabilities to enhance locally installed agents.
Microsoft may unveil further details at Ignite, though the concept has already provoked backlash, with some users criticising UI elements and others warning that the OS could become more bloated alongside complaints about a heavy Microsoft 365 AI load. 14 November 2025.
