The Reasoning Car: NVIDIA Launches Alpamayo to Give AI Vehicles Human Logic
At CES 2026, NVIDIA unveiled Alpamayo, a new suite of open‑source AI models and simulation tools designed to tackle the long tail of rare and complex driving scenarios.
The Alpamayo open‑source model family aims to strengthen autonomous systems’ perception, reasoning, and human‑like decision‑making to improve safety, with Alpamayo comprising three key components: Alpamayo 1 Model, a 10‑billion‑parameter Vision‑Language‑Action model; the AlpaSim simulator for high‑fidelity, open‑source sensing and traffic dynamics; and a Physical AI Open Dataset with more than 1,700 hours of driving data across varied geographies.
A growing list of industry players, including Jaguar Land Rover, Lucid, Uber, and Berkeley DeepDrive, plan to leverage Alpamayo for Level 4 roadmaps, while NVIDIA said DRIVE AV software will debut on U.S. roads later this year on the new Mercedes‑Benz CLA. The system uses a dual‑stack architecture, pairing a core end‑to‑end AI stack with a traditional safety stack built on NVIDIA’s Halos, to ensure redundancy and robust fail‑safe behaviour.
The DRIVE Hyperion platform itself is powered by dual DRIVE AGX Thor SoCs based on the Blackwell architecture, delivering over 2,000 TFLOPS (FP4) of real‑time compute, with all deployments anchored in Halos for validation and certification.
