Suntory says cloud breach exposed data of 100,000 people
Kyodo News reports that Suntory Holdings Ltd, a major Japanese beverage manufacturer, said personal data relating to around 100,000 people was leaked after unauthorized access to an external cloud service used by the group. Suntory stated it has not confirmed any misuse of the information at this stage. The leak included names and email addresses of about 90,000 employees of Suntory’s group companies and affiliated firms.
The breach also involved email addresses of around 7,300 people who were registered for its corporate activities experience programme as of the end of 2023, and the names of approximately 7,200 applicants for its 2026 new graduate recruitment process. The company said it was investigating the intrusion and has not disclosed any evidence of collision with other data or other compromising details.
The disclosure frames the incident as an external-cloud-service compromise affecting both current employees and external programme participants, with the possibility of broader impact on applicants and programme registrants. Kyodo News is referenced as the source of Suntory’s statements, and the article notes that no misuse of the leaked data has been confirmed yet.
