LG Electronics USA announced plans to suspend apps that allow smart TVs to function as residential proxy nodes, following research indicating over 42% of apps on its webOS store had such capabilities. The decision comes after security firm Spur reported that both LG and Samsung smart TVs have numerous apps integrated with residential proxy SDKs. LG is collaborating with app developers to eliminate these features, emphasizing that such use is not intended.
The report highlighted the prevalence of residential proxy networks, particularly that of Bright Data, in various applications, including games. Spur criticized the lack of transparency and control regarding user consent for these proxy integrations, particularly concerning minors.
