All-Day Learning: MediaTek Kompanio 540 Promises 35% Better Chromebook Battery Life
MediaTek has announced the Kompanio 540, a processor designed for the education market, with the first devices expected to hit the market in January 2026. The chip features an octa-core architecture with two Arm Cortex-A78 high-performance cores, a dual-core GPU, and support for LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.1 flash storage, enabling smooth transitions between web browsing, streaming and light gaming.
A key upgrade is improved power efficiency, with battery life said to be 35% better than its predecessor, and the design supports fanless devices for a silent, cool and portable all-day experience. It also includes a high-efficiency video decoder to enable power-saving playback of high-resolution content and external display output without excessive energy drain.
According to John Maletis, Vice President of ChromeOS at Google, the Kompanio 540 will power more Chromebooks and bring a balance of power and efficiency to users who can rely on it to bring them a full day of work and play. MediaTek’s move aims to solidify its presence in the mobile computing and education technology markets as digital learning becomes the new norm.
