Denmark Blames Russia for Cyberattacks Ahead of Elections and on Water Utility
According to the Associated Press, Denmark’s Defence Intelligence Service assessed that Russia carried out cyberattacks against Denmark in 2024 and 2025 as part of a broader “hybrid war” to create instability. The agency said a destructive attack on a Danish water utility in 2024 caused pipes to burst and left some homes without water, while a separate wave of denial-of-service attacks targeted Danish websites ahead of regional and local elections last month.
It named the pro-Russian group Z-Pentest as responsible for the water-utility incident and NoName057(16) for the election-focused website disruption, both linked to the Russian state. Danish authorities said the NoName057(16) disruption occurred in November to affect the elections, with water pressure losses reported near Køge, about 35 kilometres south of Copenhagen.
The report notes the broader campaign aims to punish countries supporting Ukraine and underscores the ongoing security concerns raised by Western officials about Russia’s cyber activities.
